About Our Plinths

(Artplinths for Pod Creative Design Ltd.)

Made in our London workshop, Artplinths are a popular choice for fine art, fashion, and retail events and photoshoots. Standard-duty plinths are fabricated in 12mm (1/2") MDF, which takes paint well and provides a stable and fault-free base for finishing. They are robust and light in weight.

We like using Medite Premier medium-density fibreboard (MDF). This is a light and very flat, stable product from a quality manufacturer. The fibres used are from fast-growing softwoods and as such are considered sustainable. Plus, the majority of the material that goes into it is waste product from other processes, so it can be also considered green. All our products – not our just plinths – are made using FSC-certificated timber.

Plinths are mitred all round, which means all the angles are cut at 45°, and all joins are seamless. We finish our products to impeccable standards: you will never see screws, nails, or pins.

We can reinforce particular plinths in 12, 18 or 25mm MDF for heavy duty use. Our heaviest-duty plinths to date were made for artworks that weighed up to 2000kg! These were specified by sculptor Tony Cragg for his recent Lisson Gallery show, and made in our workshop.

We also make beautiful plinths in real wood veneers in a range of finishes. All craftsman-made in our workshop in London, these have a low-sheen varnish which gives a rich and subtle finish, and is suitable for robust applications or where water is an issue. This makes them particularly useful for florists, but they are equally at home in a museum. The other online option, 'Natural wood finish', is just that. Your plinth is finished by hand to a high standard and you may apply your own specialist finishes or let the patina of the timber speak for itself.

We can make plinths in plywood, Perspex® Acrylic, steel, concrete, and other experimental materials, in cylindrical and other bespoke shapes. We can provide glass or Perspex® Acrylic hoods (cases) to order for any of our plinths, and locking cases with shelves for jewellers.

We also make plinths using zero-added formaldehyde (sometimes called formaldehyde-free MDF) developed specifically for use in gallery and museum applications where formaldehyde emissions need to be kept to a minimum. Please contact us for product specifications.

Our workshop is in east London. You are welcome to visit by appointment to discuss your production needs. We keep a well-appointed wood workshop and can turn around jobs fast to meet the demands of East and West End galleries, as well as the fashion, design and retail sectors.

Our 'British Standard' white matt finish can be easily repainted or touched up on site and as such is the industry standard finish for fine art, where plinths need to be regularly refurbished to keep them pristine. Another plus point is that the paint is available everywhere. We can make plinths in black or indeed any paint colour – we prefer to use Dulux paints in the workshop, so just email us your Dulux colour choice for the exact colour you want.

Alternatively, our plinths can be professionally sprayed to any RAL code. Please remember, though, that when sprayed plinths get marked or scratched they cannot be repaired speedily on site, and have to be returned to the manufacturer for repairs. This is a significant minus point to many, and the reason why you'll find our hand-finished standard plinths are a superior, practical and reasonably priced product.
